Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret information in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in question included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public in the coming days.
