Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
